Thermal paper coaters Domtar, Hansol, and Koehler have all announced a 10% price increase on all grades of thermal paper. The increases are being driven by tariffs, pulp prices, chemicals, other raw materials and increased manufacturing and supply chain costs.

Many businesses are aware that California's Prop 65 list includes bisphenols such as BPA and BPS commonly found in thermal receipt paper. More recently, Washington State passed legislation that will ban bisphenol-based thermal paper beginning January 1, 2026.

Washington State has announced new regulations impacting the future of thermal receipt paper. Starting January 1, 2026, the sale, offer for sale, or manufacture of thermal receipt paper containing bisphenols (such as BPA and BPS) will be prohibited under Washington’s Safer Products for Washington initiative. This means that all businesses—from retailers and restaurants to service providers—will need to transition to Non-Phenol Thermal Receipt Paper Rolls before the effective date.
