Is There BPA in Thermal Receipt Paper? What Businesses Need to Know

December 10th, 2024
Regulations around thermal receipt paper are changing quickly, and more businesses are looking for safer options that meet state and federal guidelines. At POS Supply Solutions, we offer BPA-free thermal paper across our entire product line, along with non-phenol thermal rolls for businesses that need to meet stricter compliance requirements.
What Is BPA and Why Has It Been Removed From Thermal Paper?
BPA (bisphenol A) is a chemical previously used as a developer in thermal paper. Concerns have grown over the years about its potential health and environmental risks, especially with frequent exposure through handling receipts. As a result, manufacturers have moved away from BPA entirely.
All of POS Supply Solutions' thermal paper rolls are BPA-free!
What About BPS In Thermal Paper?
BPS (bisphenol S) is often used as a replacement for BPA, but it is also being restricted in certain states. Under California Proposition 65, BPS is listed as a chemical of concern. This means many California businesses choose to use non-phenol thermal paper to avoid compliance complications.
Washington State Phenol Ban
Beginning January 1, 2026, Washington State is banning the use of all bisphenols including BPA and BPS in thermal receipt paper. This new regulation requires businesses operating in the state to use non-phenol thermal paper exclusively.
Phenol-Free Thermal Paper
To support businesses in regulated states, we offer non-phenol thermal paper made without BPA, BPS, or other bisphenols, while still providing reliable print quality and durability.
We’ve also put together a handy guide with non-phenol paper rolls and their compatible printers as an easy way to find alternatives:See the guide here.
Who Should Consider Non-Phenol Thermal Paper?
- Businesses operating in Washington State (required as of 2026)
- California businesses subject to Proposition 65 restrictions
- Companies with internal sustainability policies
