Hospitality Industry - Card Reader Cleaning Cards

There is one thing that can be seen across any hospitality business, be it a major hotel chain, a roadside motel, an inn, or a bed and breakfast: they pride themselves on delivering clean and efficient service to their customers.

Why should this stop when they are dealing with POS machines and devices such as: POS printers, EMV card readers, kiosks, time clocks, door locks and security access card readers, sensitive screens, receipt, label, order printer, and more? Each of these devices are used to maintain operational efficiency, cleanliness and reduce maintenance costs every day, yet are often overlooked.

A regular cleaning routine is the best way to increase both operational efficiency and the longevity of your hospitality equipment while reducing service calls. Based on manufacturers’ recommendations and customer feedback, we encourage the following best practices for optimal results for each of your devices:

Card Readers
Symptoms of a dirty card reader is card rejection, reader errors and even before those happen, repeated swipes. It is recommended that you clean your card readers once a week. During periods of more frequent usage, it should be done even more often.

Thermal Printers

Thermal printers can become dirty from “paper dust,” ink, adhesives and environmental contaminants. Cleaning cards, wipes and pens can be used to clean up the printhead build-up and should be used with every media roll change or at least twice a month. Thermal printer maintenance can prevent paper jams, poor print quality and illegible receipts.

Device Exteriors Including Screens

Visible dirt and oily or cloudy smeared screens happen all the time, especially on touch screens or on machines with a high exposure to grease and food particles. Grime build up can cause a poor customer perception and reflect bad on your business. Avoid this by using device cleaning wipes 2-3 times a week when a machine becomes noticeably dirty.

Electronic Interiors

Often overlooked, cleaning the interior of a printer or terminal can help reduce print voids, paper jams, misreads, and errors. Each time you are changing the media roll, and cleaning the thermal printheads, it is wise to clean the electronic interior as well.

Use the products noted above and clean your machines regularly. Doing that will give the best impression to customers while also saving money from expensive and unnecessary equipment repair!
